Child’s Play

I remember, just yesterday
Being alive in an innocent time.

Contented hours full of wonder.
Glorious minutes of the sublime.

No desires to distract.
No worries of concern.

All objects still shiny.
All lessons yet to learn.

Oh to feel that tranquil breeze
While suspended in pure delight.

Hearing the air whoosh by and
Seeing every thing as alright.

That time before the inescapable snap.
The instant a last smile sags into a frown.

Taking one final glimpse of paradise
Before life came crashing down.

Precious seconds become reality.
Hapless hours spin into gone.

Now floating aimlessly along
Misspent days that drag on and on.

Paper Promises

You gave me a paper Valentine
Red, rushed, so
rough.

A facsimile offered as a sign
True, together and
tomorrow.

You gave me a paper Valentine
Certainly cautiously yet
carelessly.

A promise of what could be mine.
Tainted, torn and
tattered.

You gave me a paper Valentine
Clutched and crinkled then
crumpled.

A scrap laid upon my heart line
Loose, loved, now
lost.
