Paper Promises

You gave me a paper Valentine
Red, rushed, so
rough.

A facsimile offered as a sign
True, together and
tomorrow.

You gave me a paper Valentine
Certainly cautiously yet
carelessly.

A promise of what could be mine.
Tainted, torn and
tattered.

You gave me a paper Valentine
Clutched and crinkled then
crumpled.

A scrap laid upon my heart line
Loose, loved, now
lost.

Fade to Black

(Photo found here.)

Play the long bygone movie
No longer crisp and clear.
Now only a moment rendered too often
Faded colors like an old souvenir.

DISSOLVE IN

From a not-to-distance window
She watches him walk to his car
On a crazy warm January morning
His movements memorized from a far.

He gets in and starts the engine
Drives away and into the cloudy sunrise
Eyes straight ahead, never looking back
Towards the window from where she cries.

CUE SAD MUSIC

Time for the closing scene
Distorted distracting bokeh - then
Only taillights - red lights
Seen again and again and again.

MUSIC UNDER AND OUT

FADE TO BLACK

Be Still

Lie here.
Lie still.

Blood rushes to my brain.
Goosebumps overtake my skin.
Silence fills my ears.
Blind love shrouds my eyes.
Darkness penetrates my soul.

Lay here.
Lay still.

Enjoy the coolness of
dank and dark.
Go with the solitude of
quiet and emptiness.
Look anew to comprehend
dream and reality.

Be here.
Be still.

The End

Abruptly. No, it was not.

Emotional. Not as I had imagined.

Tears. There were none.

Dreamlike. What we had, or could have had.

Emptiness.

Disappointment. Without a doubt.

Goodbyes. There were none.

Love. Buried so deep that it struggles to find a way out.

Regrets. Only one.

Possibilities. Now I see them.

Freedom. Finally.

The End

Carolina Moon

Only a sliver of a moon
dimly lit at twilight

Mirroring my mood of fading blue
wanton to take flight

Up into the rolling dark clouds
to stay for the night

Floating high like a lost firefly
glowing with the moonlight

Looking down from the Carolina sky
with the coastline in sight

I see everything clearly illuminated
in the quiet of tonight
